Summary:
The Union Health Ministry has launched JANANI, a digital platform designed to strengthen maternal and child healthcare through real-time monitoring, seamless beneficiary tracking, and integrated digital health records. Developed as an upgraded version of the Reproductive and Child Health portal, the system supports continuous care across pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care, and family planning services. Key features include QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health cards, automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, real-time dashboards, and integration with national health platforms such as U-WIN and POSHAN. The platform also enables self-registration through web and mobile applications, helping improve continuity of care, especially for migratory populations.
The Union Health Ministry has introduced a new digital platform intended to improve maternal and child healthcare services through real-time monitoring, seamless beneficiary tracking, and integrated digital health records.
Unveiled at the national summit on Innovation and Inclusivity: Best Practices Shaping India’s Health Future, the platform—JANANI (Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care)—has been developed as a service-oriented system to comprehensively maintain and monitor the digital health records of women throughout their reproductive years, according to a ministry statement.
Built as an enhanced version of the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal, JANANI is designed to create longitudinal health records by documenting healthcare service events across the full continuum of care.
The platform will support continuous monitoring of maternal and child healthcare services, including antenatal care, birth preparedness, institutional deliveries, postnatal care, newborn services, home-based care for newborns and young children, and family planning support.
According to the ministry, the system is intended to ensure uninterrupted care at every stage through timely interventions and effective beneficiary monitoring.
One of the platform’s major features is the introduction of QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health (MCH) cards, enabling easy portability and access to health records across healthcare centres.
JANANI also includes automated notifications for high-risk pregnancies, real-time dashboards for supervisory oversight, and due-list generation tools for frontline healthcare workers, supporting targeted follow-ups and timely interventions.
The platform has been designed with interoperability capabilities, allowing integration with national digital health initiatives such as U-WIN and POSHAN to enable smooth data sharing and improved programme coordination.
Beneficiaries can enrol using unique identifiers including ABHA, Aadhaar-based OTP or biometric authentication, and mobile numbers. The ministry noted that the platform’s pan-India search functionality will help maintain continuity of care for migratory populations while minimising duplication of records.
Additionally, JANANI offers self-registration through web and mobile applications, enabling beneficiaries to access digital MCH cards, details of nearby healthcare facilities, expected delivery locations, as well as health and nutrition-related guidance.
