OMRON Launches Large-Scale Manufacturing Operations at Its First Indian Facility

Summary:
OMRON Healthcare has started full-scale production of blood pressure monitors at its first manufacturing facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, marking a major step in expanding its manufacturing presence in India and reducing dependence on Vietnam. The 24,000-square-metre plant, equipped with five production lines, aims to manufacture 3 million units annually by 2028, with plans to increase capacity tenfold and explore exports to international markets. The facility will initially produce blood pressure monitoring devices and may eventually manufacture nebulizers. The initiative is expected to support India’s Make in India programme through local sourcing, employment generation and workforce development while strengthening OMRON’s supply chain.

OMRON Healthcare has commenced commercial-scale manufacturing of blood pressure monitors at its first production facility in India, strengthening its domestic supply capabilities and diversifying a manufacturing network that has traditionally depended largely on Vietnam.

Located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, the 24,000-square-metre facility houses five manufacturing lines and will initially produce devices for the Indian market, according to an announcement published by OMRON Healthcare on Friday. The company plans to expand the plant’s manufacturing capacity by ten times by 2028, with the longer-term objective of supplying international markets as well.

India Becomes Part of OMRON’s Global Manufacturing Footprint

OMRON established its Indian manufacturing subsidiary in July 2022 and commenced large-scale production in October 2026. According to the company’s factory information, the facility employed 120 people as of November 2026.

Initial manufacturing will cover conventional blood pressure monitors and advanced models capable of tracking changes in readings and connecting to the OMRON Connect health management application. The company has introduced manufacturing processes and quality assurance standards from its Japanese and Vietnamese facilities to the Chennai plant.

OMRON aims to manufacture approximately 3 million units annually in India by 2028. Production could potentially increase to around 3.5 million units if the facility operates across three shifts. The plant is also expected to serve European markets, adding to the company’s existing manufacturing operations in Vietnam.

OMRON Healthcare President and Chief Executive Ayumu Okada said that India has the potential to emerge as one of the company’s major manufacturing hubs. Establishing the facility will also help minimise supply-chain vulnerabilities associated with depending on a single country or production location.

OMRON Eyes Growth in India’s Underserved Blood Pressure Monitoring Market

OMRON estimates that approximately 300 million people in India are living with hypertension, while fewer than 5% of households have a blood pressure monitoring device for home use. These estimates highlight the market potential identified by the company, although they are its own industry assessments rather than independently verified operational figures.

OMRON controlled approximately 40% of India’s blood pressure monitor market in 2025. The company aims to increase household ownership of these devices to around 10% by 2030. However, Okada clarified that manufacturing products locally would not necessarily result in lower device prices.

India is also working to strengthen its domestic medical-device manufacturing ecosystem through the government’s Make in India initiative. OMRON stated that the Chennai facility would support this objective through local procurement, workforce development and employment generation.

The new manufacturing base will bring production closer to a significant potential consumer market while reducing the company’s dependence on existing manufacturing locations. It will also provide opportunities to broaden the facility’s product portfolio, with OMRON considering the future production of nebulizers used for respiratory treatment.

Future Manufacturing Expansion Depends on Planned Targets

Although the Chennai facility has commenced operations, its proposed tenfold capacity expansion by 2028, contribution to European supplies and introduction of additional product categories are still planned developments. Their implementation will depend on market demand, supply-chain performance and the necessary regulatory approvals.

The manufacturing facility launch is independent of OMRON Healthcare Singapore’s previously announced partnership with bolttech and QBE. That collaboration focused on integrating health-monitoring devices with insurance offerings and subscription-based services.
