Summary:India's Major Health Insurance Scheme, Ayushman Bharat Prime Minister Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has officially launched in Delhi. Residents can now register for ₹ 10 lakh per family coverage per year- ₹ 5 lakh from the center and additional ₹ 5 lakh from Delhi government. This rollout makes Delhi the 35th state/UT to implement this scheme. Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Scheme Now Active in Delhi Delhi has started registration under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) from 7 July 2025. Eligible families in the national capital can now avail cashless treatment of up to ₹ 10 lakh per year- ₹ 5 lakh provided by the central government and another 5 lakh top-ups can be provided. The objective of this major step is to improve the access to healthcare and reduce out-off-pocket medical expenses for financially weaker homes. MoU Signing & Key Officials Present Delhi officially joined the nationwide AB-PMJY initiative after a Memorandum of MoU (MoU) between the National Health Authority (NHA) and the Delhi government on 5 April 2025. The agreement was made by LS Changsan (CEO, NHA) and Dr. SB was prepared by Deepak Kumar (Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Delhi). Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta participated in the MoU signature and the first distribution of Ayushman cards starting from April 10. Empanelled Hospitals & Coverage Details Currently, about 100 hospitals have been covered under the scheme in Delhi, including about 67 private and several top public hospitals such as Lok Nayak Hospital and RGSSH. Beneficiaries can avail treatment for secondary and tertiary care in these facilities without any upfront payment. Implementation Challenges While the rollout is important, some large private hospitals have expressed concern about low reimbursement rates (only 30–40% of real treatment costs) and delay in payment under the scheme. The Association of Healthcare Providers (India) have urged the government to amend rates and include interest on delayed payment. Upcoming Healthcare Initiatives in Delhi For complement of AB-PMJAY, Delhi government is also rolling other schemes: 1,139 Ayushman Aagya temples (AAMS) are being launched for extensive community outreach. Mobile enrollment van Ayushman will assist senior citizens in registration under Vandana Yojana. Director General of Health Services (DGHS) will oversee the rollout of PM-Abhim and AAMS. Government's vision for Delhi's healthcare Government’s Vision for Delhi’s Healthcare Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh emphasized that this partnership is a transformational moment for the city's healthcare infrastructure. He said, "We are rebuilding, which was neglected over the years, and Ayushman Bharat will be central for our health mission." Final Note With this launch, residents of Delhi can now use the health insurance scheme funded by the world's largest government, which is designed to promote affordable, justified and quality healthcare across India.
