Indore: Government Hospital Launches First Obesity Clinic, Treatment to Be Provided at No Cost

Patients have already reported significant health improvements following surgery, describing the initiative as a major relief for residents. 

Obesity Clinic: A bariatric (obesity) and metabolic clinic began operations on Monday at the Government MY Hospital in Indore. It is the first facility of its kind in the state’s government healthcare system, eliminating the need for obese patients to depend on private hospitals for treatment.

While inaugurating the clinic, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Sudam Khade stated that obesity is quickly emerging as a significant social concern. It is contributing to a rise in diabetes, hypertension, and other health conditions. He attributed this trend largely to changing lifestyles and unhealthy dietary patterns. Eligible patients will receive free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. In private hospitals, the cost of such surgery typically ranges between ₹4 and ₹5 lakh, but it will now be provided at no charge at MY Hospital. The clinic will offer comprehensive services, including evaluation, counselling, and surgery when required, all under one roof.

Major Relief for Residents

Gul Afshan, a 30-year-old resident of Khajrana, shared that her weight dropped from 120 kg to 97 kg within one and a half months after undergoing surgery. As a result, she experienced relief from diabetes and now feels healthier than before. Likewise, Sushma Bhilware reported a reduction in her weight from 103 kg to 70 kg, which has led to better blood pressure control and improvement in other health concerns.
