A new study conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, has found that exposure to air pollution during pregnancy may hinder fetal growth and increase the risk of neurological abnormalities. The research provides fresh insights into the biological mechanisms through which pollutants affect early development and adds to growing evidence highlighting the harmful health effects of air pollution. Fine particulate matter such as PM2.5 has long been associated with respiratory disorders, worsening of hypertension and diabetes, and increased cardiovascular risks. Previous studies have also linked long-term exposure to polluted air with outcomes such as low birth weight, stillbirth, and premature delivery. The AIIMS study goes a step further by explaining how pollution interferes with cellular processes that are essential for normal fetal growth. According to Dr. Subhradip Karmakar, professor of biochemistry at AIIMS and one of the study’s authors, the research identified a key biological pathway showing how air pollution reduces levels of a protein crucial for fetal development. The study explains that when pregnant women inhale ultrafine particles, including PM2.5 and PM10, the body experiences oxidative stress, triggering inflammation and the release of cytokines, which are proteins involved in immune responses. These inflammatory factors, along with ultrafine particles and pollutants such as heavy metals, can cross the placenta and reduce levels of IGFBP3, a protein that plays a vital role in regulating cell growth in the fetus. Dr. Karmakar noted that IGFBP3 may not be the only important protein affected by pollution, suggesting that other developmental proteins could also be impacted. Researchers observed this process in pregnant rats exposed to polluted air and later monitored the neurological development of their offspring. The findings showed that the exposed pups experienced lasting difficulties in motor skills, cognitive function, and emotional regulation, indicating neurodevelopmental impairment and gender-specific vulnerabilities resulting from prenatal particulate exposure. The animal study findings were supported by observations from human populations. Delivery records from hospitals in New Delhi, where pregnant women faced higher levels of PM2.5 exposure, showed increased rates of low-birth-weight infants and preeclampsia compared with women living in Deoghar, Jharkhand, where pollution levels were lower. Dr. Karmakar said the next phase of the research will focus on tracking IGFBP3 as a biomarker in human pregnancies, which could provide a deeper understanding of how air pollution contributes to developmental disorders in unborn children.
