"Two deaths have been identified as part of the cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting Michigan. According to medical records, both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration," the department stated. Health authorities noted that fatalities linked to cyclosporiasis are uncommon because the infection is generally not considered life-threatening. Michigan has recorded 11,234 cases so far, including 193 hospitalisations. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also verified the two outbreak-related deaths. In its July 28 update, the agency reported 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases across 45 states since May 1, along with more than 11,500 suspected cases—mainly in Michigan and Ohio—that are awaiting laboratory confirmation. A total of 423 people have been hospitalised during the outbreak. FDA Connects Outbreak to Recalled Iceberg Lettuce The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has traced part of the outbreak to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. On July 17, the company voluntarily recalled the affected products and announced that it would stop sourcing iceberg lettuce from central Mexico for the remainder of the growing season. The recalled lettuce has been associated with infections reported in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. In a separate investigation, the CDC, FDA, and state health departments are examining another Cyclospora outbreak tied to iceberg lettuce across nine states, where at least 1,947 people have fallen ill and 98 have been hospitalised. Authorities are also investigating whether parsley and cilantro could be additional sources of the outbreak. What Is Cyclospora? Cyclospora is an intestinal parasite that typically spreads through food or water contaminated with the organism. Common symptoms include: Persistent watery diarrhoea Stomach cramps Bloating Nausea Excessive gas Mild fever Reduced appetite Weight loss What Should You Do If You Suspect Cyclosporiasis? Most cases are mild and improve without medical treatment. However, people with weakened immune systems may experience prolonged or severe illness and could require antibiotic therapy. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids to replace those lost through diarrhoea. Since diarrhoea can result from many different causes, obtaining an accurate diagnosis is important because cyclosporiasis can be treated with a specific antibiotic. Seek immediate medical care if you develop severe diarrhoea, dizziness when standing, or a rapid heartbeat, as these may indicate significant dehydration. How Is It Diagnosed and Treated? Cyclosporiasis is diagnosed through a stool test that detects the Cyclospora parasite. While some mild infections may clear without treatment, confirmed cases are generally treated with the antibiotic trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX). Depending on the severity of the illness, doctors may also recommend: Medication to help control diarrhoea, when appropriate. Oral or intravenous fluids to prevent or treat dehydration.
