As Covid-19 cases rise in some parts of India, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), reassured the public on Monday that the current infections remain mild in nature. Addressing concerns about new Covid variants, Dr. Bahl stated that recent genome sequencing in western and southern India has identified Omicron sub-variants such as LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1—none of which are associated with severe disease. “Among these, the first three are more prevalent,” he said, adding that sequencing is still underway in other regions and more information on variants is expected soon. Dr. Bahl noted that the increase in cases began in the southern states, followed by the western region, and is now being observed in northern India. However, he emphasized that the situation is under control, with cases being closely tracked through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). “There is no need for panic or immediate action. People should continue to follow standard safety precautions,” he advised. When asked about the necessity of booster doses, Dr. Bahl responded, “As of now, there is no need for additional vaccination. India is well-equipped to manufacture vaccines quickly if the need arises.” His message underscores that while vigilance is important, the current situation does not warrant alarm.
