Summary:
A study finds that Ankylosing Spondylitis is linked to a significantly higher risk of kidney and urinary tract disorders, including Chronic Kidney Disease and Acute Kidney Injury, with patients more than twice as likely to develop CKD and face complications such as dialysis, proteinuria, and hematuria. The research also shows increased risks of kidney stones and related cancers, particularly among men, highlighting the need for early screening and coordinated long-term care to reduce serious health outcomes.
A large population-based study has shown that Ankylosing Spondylitis is strongly associated with a higher likelihood of developing kidney and urinary tract conditions, including Chronic Kidney Disease and Acute Kidney Injury. Researchers found that individuals with AS were more than twice as likely to develop CKD and faced increased risks of dialysis, proteinuria, hematuria, and other renal complications.
The study also identified a greater incidence of urolithiasis and cancers affecting the kidneys or urinary tract among AS patients, with men generally at higher risk than women. Experts emphasised that these findings underline the importance of early kidney monitoring and integrated long-term care to help prevent serious complications in people with ankylosing spondylitis.
