Summary:
Howden Insurance Brokers India has launched a dedicated Cancer Care Group Policy to enhance employee health benefits, with AstraZeneca India adopting the cover as part of its employee wellness programme. Designed to address the lack of specialised group cancer insurance in India, the policy offers coverage of ₹15 lakh to ₹30 lakh, includes parents, covers pre-existing cancer conditions without a waiting period, and supports extended treatment, including advanced therapies. Howden said the initiative aims to expand access to disease-specific insurance through collaboration with insurers and employers while improving healthcare protection for India’s workforce.
Howden Insurance Brokers India has introduced a dedicated Cancer Care Group Policy aimed at strengthening employee health benefits in the workplace. AstraZeneca India has become one of the first organisations to incorporate the policy into its employee wellness programme, offering protection that goes beyond traditional health insurance.
According to Howden India, its market analysis showed that specialised group cancer insurance products are largely absent in India, as insurers have been cautious due to concerns over cancer incidence rates, pricing complexities, and limited actuarial evidence.
The company said that although the growing burden of cancer is well recognised, creating a viable insurance solution has remained difficult because of the high cost and long duration of treatment. Working with selected insurance partners, Howden India has developed a group cancer policy that could serve as a framework for employer-backed, disease-specific insurance offerings in the country.
Designed to improve access to cancer-related financial protection, the policy recognises that treatment often extends well beyond routine hospital stays. It provides dedicated coverage for extended treatment journeys, including newer therapies and oral cancer medications.
The plan offers coverage ranging from ₹15 lakh to ₹30 lakh, with the option to include parents under the family cover. It also covers all existing cancer-related conditions without any waiting period, provides enhanced pre- and post-hospitalisation benefits, and works alongside existing Mediclaim policies.
Commenting on the initiative, Amit Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Howden India, said the solution demonstrates that meaningful insurance innovation comes from addressing real-world challenges. He added that the policy reflects how collaboration and fresh thinking can help tackle complex health risks while reshaping employee benefit programmes.
Praveen Rao Akkinepally, Country President and Managing Director of AstraZeneca India, said the company remains committed to improving access to quality healthcare and life-saving treatments. He noted that introducing the Cancer Care Cover for employees and their families reflects AstraZeneca’s broader commitment to inclusive healthcare and aims to encourage wider discussions on advancing employee well-being and healthcare accessibility in India.
Howden India said the new Cancer Care Group Policy aligns with its strategy of developing purpose-driven insurance solutions for corporate customers. The company added that it will continue collaborating with insurers and employers to broaden the availability of disease-specific insurance products that address the evolving healthcare needs of India’s workforce.
