PM to Launch PGI Development Projects Valued at ₹1,000 Crore Through Virtual Event

Summary:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to virtually inaugurate three major healthcare facilities at PGI—the Advanced Neuroscience Centre, Mother and Child Care Centre, and Critical Care Block—in projects collectively valued at nearly ₹1,000 crore. PGI is preparing for an online launch, with a dedicated committee overseeing arrangements. The new facilities are expected to significantly enhance the institute’s healthcare capacity, with the neuroscience centre already offering outpatient services and the 430-bed Mother and Child Care Centre set to become fully operational soon. The inauguration will also enable the deployment of advanced medical equipment donated by Infosys and further strengthen critical care services in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to virtually dedicate three key healthcare facilities at PGI to the public—the Advanced Neuroscience Centre, the Mother and Child Care Centre, and the newly built Critical Care Block. Sources within the institute indicated that preparations are underway for an online inauguration, as a physical visit by the Prime Minister is not currently anticipated. His last visit to the institute was during its annual convocation in 2015.

PGI officials are working on detailed virtual arrangements to ensure a smooth event and prevent any technical issues. While plans are being kept confidential, the approach is similar to 2024, when the Prime Minister remotely inaugurated PGI’s 100-bed satellite centre in Ferozepur. An institute official said a dedicated committee has been formed to oversee planning and coordination for the high-profile broadcast.

The inauguration will mark the launch of healthcare projects collectively valued at nearly ₹1,000 crore. Among them is the ₹490 crore Advanced Neuroscience Centre, sanctioned in 2017, where outpatient services commenced on April 20. Construction began in 2020, and the facility was originally scheduled to be inaugurated by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda during the April 30 convocation before the event was deferred.

The ₹485 crore Mother and Child Care Centre has also been completed and is expected to become fully functional this month. The five-storey facility, with a capacity of 430 beds, recently attracted attention because advanced medical equipment worth ₹150 crore, donated by Infosys in 2024, has remained unpacked and unused pending the official inauguration.

In addition, the newly developed Critical Care Block will be formally opened during the virtual ceremony, further enhancing the region’s healthcare capabilities once the inauguration date is finalised.
